The Prayer of a Future Leader

Recently, Richard Saxer attended AKT training, as he gears up to be a leader for the Angola Kairos community.

We asked him to sum up the experience, and Richard decided the best way to sum it up was via a prayer.

It’s beautiful, it’s simple and it’s a powerful example of how Jesus uses those who accept the call to do His powerful work.

From Richard:

Blessed Jesus, in Kairos we believe that our service is done at your bidding: it is not by accident that any of us bring your Good News to our incarcerated brothers and sisters. Lord, I am often shy and short on self-confidence, but I know how to show up and follow directions. With your help and the support of my brothers, I can do this job you have asked me to do.  And, Lord, help us make sure that we have a lot of fun as well!

Jesus, it is both exciting and unnerving to me.  Excitedly I remember weekends in the past that have been so full of your Holy Spirit and power.  So, eagerly I look forward to participating more in this ministry.  Yet, Lord, my anticipation is also mixed with fear and trembling ….. for I know all too well how I can mess things up when I do not listen to you or do things your way.

Courage and obedience don’t come easily to me, Jesus.  Help me to trust your choices and direction.  You know that I need wise leaders who will speak to me of you. Help me to hear them.  But, especially help me to listen to you as we call and form your team.

Okay, Lord.  You are in charge and go before us into that holy place!  And we know that you need our hands, feet, mouths, and ears to do the work of incarnate listening and loving in prison with you.  Thank you for entrusting us with this ministry.  I will give it my very best as we give you the honor and glory.

It is in your holy name that I pray.

Amen.

Fast Approaching

Before we blink, Kairos 56 will be upon us.

In fact, we are just two months away from team formation.

You can start preparing and sharing the news of #56 today.

You can start by encouraging others to sign up for the prayer chain. Follow this link to the chain. As you know, the entire weekend will be held in prayer and the residents of Angola are always amazed at how this happens.

Meanwhile, if you’d like to be on this team, there’s still time. Just email Trent Garrett.

Applications can be found here.

Agape Time

It’s also time to start collecting agape.

If you have Sunday School classes who would like to participate, now is the time to start.

A very simple need is table placemats. Simply have children draw a peaceful scene with a message of God’s love.

The placemats should NOT have any last names, just the child’s first name and their age.

You can have those and any Agape mailed to Kathy Michaels, Agape coordinator. Please reach out to her directly for mailing instructions.

Closing Ceremony

Don’t have time to be on the team? You can still show support by attending the closing ceremony inside Angola’s Main Camp.

To do so, you will need to fill out a form and return it to a team member.

Closing forms are located here.

Angola #56 Main Prison One Day Retreat

Trent Garrett had a fantastic one day retreat this past Saturday.

Below is his summary. Remember, if you would like to serve on his November team, reach out to him with an email.

We arrived at the front gate around 7:50 am.  Rev. Tom Crosby and I rode together.  The guards on the gate were extremely welcoming and we entered the Front Gate without incident.  Arriving just ahead of Tom and myself we the Rev. Doyle Bennett, Bro. Rodney Young, Bro. Morris Talley, Bro. Mike Ryan and Bro. Robert “Bob” Leitner.  About 5 minutes later Bro. Joel Bajat, Bro. Bud Richardson Bro. Benjamin “Ben” Nabors and Bro. Laine Leger arrived.  We sat and waited.  Around 8:15 am, Rev. Freddie “Jackson” Sanders, Bro. Gerald Sanders, Bro. Rusty Chastant and Bro. John Brown arrived. God has truly moved in a mighty way in forming this One Day Retreat team.

Everyone packed into their vehicles and headed for Main Prison.

It was a beautiful day. The rain held off most of the day.  The group gathered in the area just outside the cage and Rev. Freddie “Jackson” Sanders led us in a short prayer.

The One Day was held upstairs in the Education Building down the walk from the Chapel.  The residents were waiting for us.  They seemed almost as excited to see us as we were to see them.  Anthony, Maurice, the Chaplain, etc. had packed the room with residents.  We had seven (7) tables, each with 6 residents.  Rev. Doyle Bennett and Bro. Morris Talley, Bro. Rodney Young and Bro. Bud Richardson, and Bro. John Brown and Bro. Ben Nabors each partnered at three of the tables.  Rev. Tom Crosby, Bro. Bob Leitner, Bro. Joel Bajat and Bro. Laine Leger each acted as table leaders at the remaining four (4) tables.

Bro. Gerald Sanders and Bro. Rusty Chastant, with a little help from Rev. Freddie Sanders, started off the One Day with a few songs to get everyone up on their feet.  After that, Bro. John Brown gave the first talk of the day entitled, “Strive to Live in the Truth.”  Bro. John encouraged the group to, “Seek, know, speak and live the truth.”  Laine Leger then gave a talk entitled, “Loving is Better than Hurting.”  Laine wanted the residents to know that Jesus calls us to, “Love your enemies, love those who disagree, love the sinner and Live Him.” (Meaning, Christ gave us the example to follow.)  The third talk was given by Rev. Tom Crosby and it was entitled, “Seek Christian Fellowship.”  Rev. Crosby asked the residents to discuss at their tables, “How do I stay connected with other believers?”

The fourth talk was given by Bro. Benjamin “Ben” Nabors and it was entitled, “Love the Samaritan.”  Bro. Ben gave the residents and team members a little of the history behind the relationship between the Samaritans and the Jews.  Bro. Ben suggested that we not let differences divide us.  The fifth talk was entitled, “Destroying Hatred.”  Bro. Joel Bajat encouraged the residents and team members to have love for one another.  We may not always like each other but “We must forgive as we are forgiven.”

Bro. Checo Yancy arrived at Main Prison around 12:30 with 25 pizzas.  The group took about 30-40 minutes and broke bread together.  Afterwards, Bro. Gerald Sanders, Bro. Rusty Chastant and Rev. Freddie Sanders led several songs.

Rev. Freddie Sanders then gave the sixth talk entitled, “Carrying the Christ-Light.”  Rev. Sanders asked a very poignant question, “Can the world see Christ in you?”  Certainly something we all need to ask ourselves daily.

Bro. Checo Yancy then gave the seventh talk entitled, “Pray Every Day.”  Bro. Yancy told the group that, “We need to be able to surrender our will to Christ’s will for us.”  The final talk was given by Rev. Doyle Bennett.  Rev. Bennett started by asking us, “What would Jesus Do?”  Rev. Bennett took us on a brief walk through some of the highways and byways that Jesus passed through on the way to the Cross.  At the end of our journey, Rev. Bennett asked us, “How can I begin doing what Jesus would do?”

The members of the team attending the One Day Retreat at Angola-Main Prison departed for home after Rev. Doyle Bennett prayed for the guards, the administration, the residents and for safe travels for the team members.  We started with fifteen team members, when we left, there were sixteen of us, including Bro. Checo Yancy.

God Bless you,

Trent A. Garrett

Future Leaders

Congrats and Thank You to Richard Saxer and Bob Leitner

We are excited to announce  two future leaders have following through with their calling to lead.

Richard Saxer and Bob Leitner are both poised to take on the leadership cycle and head to AKT training.

AKT stands for Advanced Kairos Training.

During these weekends, future leaders from all over the country gather with trainers and leaders from the Kairos community to learn best practices for Kairos leadership.

They learn what the community means by “riverbanks” and most importantly, they are reminded once again of the Kairos commitment to bring Christ into prisons all over the world.

Richard will be attending AKT training in Georgia this August, while Bob will be attending an AKT training in Louisiana this coming Spring.

Richard is set to lead in November of 2014, after having served as Mike Ryan’s observing leader (aka Captain Chronos) this February.

Bob will lead in February of 2015.

Please keep both of them in your prayers as they set out on this journey.

If you would like to send Richard and Bob an email of support, please do so:

If anyone is interested in serving as a leader in the Kairos community, please send en email to Todd Rossnagel, who can explain what is required and what the timeline looks like: trossnagel@gmail.com

If you would like to download an application, please click here.

Trent recently reached out to to our community with a message:

For those of you who cannot commit to the team, please be reminded that we are desperately in need of Agape.

If you cannot make a financial donation, then consider going online and signing up to pray in a 10-minute block.  You can sign-up as many times as you can.  There is also an opportunity for you to get your local congregation involved by submitting placemats for the meals that the residents will be served while we are in Angola.  One of the more recognized forms of Agape are the cookies.

As some of you may be aware, Kairos has been called the “Cookie” Ministry.  In order for us to maintain our reputation, we are going to need cookies and lots of them.  So please consider organizing groups in your community to bake cookies.

I look forward to all of your continued involvement in Kairos and remember to tell your friends about this ministry.

Sincerely, Trent

Upcoming One Day Retreats

There are two upcoming one day retreats. For those of you who have never attended a one day retreat, here is a brief description.

They are traditionally held six months prior to the next full Kairos weekend at the Camp the weekend will be held in. A one day reunion is for all residents who have ever been to a Kairos. This is an excellent opportunity for those who may not be attending a prayer and share to re-engage with the community. There are a series of talks, very similar to a full weekend.

The one day retreat also serves as a good preparation for the future leader – so be nice and listen!

The same rules for a regular weekend apply – observe the raised hand, no blue jeans, no items in – no items out, etc.

There are two upcoming one day retreats:

  • August 10: Trent’s one day retreat in Main
  • September 14: Mike Ryan’s one day retreat (camp to be determined)

If you have served on a Kairos team and are interested in helping serve on either of these one day retreats, please contact Trent or Mike.
